About FMP

Final Major Project

A collaboration between Alexandra Palphreyman - Design for Performance BA(Hons) - Birmingham City University, and Body Synergy.

FMP Aim

The aim is to collaborate with Birmingham based company ‘Body Synergy’, to design a capsule collection of 7 appropriate and practical costumes for Body Synergy’s pole fitness showcase themed 'A Night at the Movies'. Designing specifically for, ‘Cell Block Tango’ from ‘Chicago’. Making a minimum of 3 bespoke garments that will be worn during a short film, then taken further to be used in the show.

Objectives

  • To research the original Chicago play, written by Maurine Dallas Watkins in 1926, including fashion at the time and any political influences.
  • To research and design styling and accessory possibilities that are appropriate for pole dancing, including shoes and props.
  • Collaborate with other people as well as Body Synergy to produce a short film, including choreographers, filmmakers and music technology students to create appropriate music for the film.
  • To create costumes which are practical to use on a pole, and which are inline with pole fitness costume guidelines.
  • To research and collect different technical fabrics which could be used for the garments, including fabrics with UV and fiberoptic properties.
  • To design a capsule collection of 7 costumes for each performer - 6 females and 1 male. Making a minimum of 3 costumes based on original research.

Performance

The 'performance' will be a 3 minute short film showcasing the bespoke costumes, choreography and original music based on relevant research.

Event

Body Synergy is putting on a Pole Fitness showcase at the Tower Mount Ballroom in Birmingham in October 2016; themed 'A Night at the Movies'.
